The ALS Story
by Jerry Adesewo

When the Abuja Literary Society, then known as 'Authors in Abuja' took the center stage some years back, nobody knew it could see the light of the day, like the popular Yoruba aphorism 'the man that people thought could not erect a hut, had built a mighty mansion.'

Unknown to many people, ALS, as it is simply called, is the brainchild of Mr. Victor Anoliefo. He conceived it alongside Dr.Ike Anya, and Ken Ike Okere.

One school of thought alleged that the lacklustre performance of the society at its early stage was due to its name which made people regard it as a forum for the likes of professor Wole Soyinka, Zulu Sofola, J.P Clark, Tanure Ojaide, Fred Agbeyegbe and their ilk. Not many people knew that it was designed to bring together all literary minded people i.e poets, authors, playwrights, musicians, actors and many more, regardless of whether they are established or upcoming. It was in view of this that it metamorphosed from 'Authors in Abuja' to 'Abuja literary society' by which it is now popularly known.

Since that all-important transformation, the Abuja Literary Society which meets every last Friday of the month at the GODI place Abuja, has attained tremendous heights. The publicity stunts and know-how of its creator and Quillmaster Victor Anoliefo paid off as it has now become a sort of haven for people from all works of life. At every gathering members have the opportunity to read and have their works discussed, criticized and sometimes edited by others. Diplomats and other foreign guests are regular faces at ALS monthly readings, adding a global dimension.

The society has on two occasions been hosted by the ex-culture minister, Chief Ojo Maduekwe. This occasion was tagged Ministers Culture House. Some of the club members read their works as usual.

Not too long ago, ALS sent forth one of her prominent members, Arc. Ferdinand Agu who has been appoiinted the Director General of National Maritime Authority. Agu is the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Society. This reception was chaired by the Attorney General of the federation, Chief Bola Ige. That night (March 11, 2001) was another great day in her calendar as it drew out people, great Nigerians from the public and private sector, among whom were Senator Mike Ajegbo, Mr Enitan Sanusi, publisher of policy magazine, and Chairman of GODI, Eddie Iroh, D.G of FRCN, Kema Chikwe, Aviation Minister, Ojo Maduekwe, Transport Minister, among others.

As part of the Society's activities, a journal is published quarterly to acquaint the Abuja populace of her activities. Currently an anthology of poems to be edited by its quillmaster, Mr. Victor Anoliefo, is being put together.

Recently another of her members and secretary of the group, Dr Ike Anya was sent forth in a grand reception held at the residence of Mr. Michell Deelen of the Dutch Embassy. Ike is on his way to the UK for further studies.

How ever, if you must know more about the Society, that is fast gaining international recognition, then you must visit her web page at www.cnenigeria.com or join them every last Friday of the month at GODI PLACE at Plot 433 Lobito crescent Wuse II Abuja.
