Literary Society Debuts
 by Victor Anoliefo

A new literary organization has been formed in the federal capital territory. Tagged, Abuja Literary Society (ALS) the organization aims to advance the cause of books, arts and writing in the nation's capital city. Rising from the ashes of the now monribund Authors in Abuja (AIA), the ALS will help to promote literary activities especially among the younger generation. Speaking recently at the World Book and Copyright Day ceremony marked in Abuja, a representative and co-founder of the society Dr Ike Anya explained that the society was to embark on a survey of secondary school students in the FCf in order to identify barriers to a better reading culture and to enumerate the reading needs of the students. As a first step in this direction, the society distributed questionnaires to students who attended the ceremony. The questionnaire session was aimed at obtaining and collating data on the reading needs of secondary school students in the Federal Capital Territory.

Other activities slated by the society include, monthly reading sessions, outreach programmes, Abuja Literary Day, drama/musical sketches, literary competitions, seminars etc. The, British Council, Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) and Abuja Literary Society (ALS) jointly organized the World Book and Copyright Day ceremony. Other features at the ceremony were a presentation by the National Copyright Commission, book exhibitions and  inauguration of the FCT Copyright Committee.

Nnamdi

Death seemed certain
Sprawled on the large divan
Grandfather lay.

Call my children
He mutters faintly
And my grandchildren too.

Rush! Telex! Send teleegrams
Couriers field day!
Humpty, dumpy speed of light.
The called gather

I am going, says Grandy
Where to?  I asked.
To the Beyond, child
To the mills of my weaving.
Will you come back?
Were I permitted
Then shall I come back.

To me? I asked
Yes loved one. To you.
Your house shall bear me.
Your hands shall tickle me to sleep.
Your love shall bring me to
manhood again...

But Grandy...
Let me finish, Ugom
My time is short...

Pause...labourized breathing,
Time ageing
voice awhispering
Urgency communicated!

I shall bring you...peace..and...
Almost gone! Tears in my eyes!
Grandy! Grandy! cried I
...and...blessings. ..love...
Breathing stopped. He is..gone.
Age abov100
Minejust 10.

Dazed am I
Understood not what Grandy said
Till the birth of my son
Saw Grandy smiling at me from the cot!
I pause, Frozen in time. Memory flies
...back

I remember the whispered voice,
the rasping sound of the dying
saying: so shall I come back to you...

Sudden love overwhelms me
I tickle him, kiss, caress, hold him high.
Proud mother smiles
But does not understand
What shall we call him, she asked

No pause this time. No doubt.
Message as clear as sunlight.

NNAMDI, says I.
"Father is alive!"
