The Silence

Natasha Ashwe

The silence blinds me in its bleak oblivion

And my eyes glaze over

Wandering after the sounds of nothingness

The hours of light have come and gone

With no joy

And now I drown in the reign of darkness

Yet the essence of him is alcohol

Laced in my blood

Streaming through the thoughts keeping me awake

And the dreams that I flee from

Where he is god

Wait in line above my pillow

For the devil's sake

The white pieces of night watch this black pawn

Those stars in the cold

Emptying face of the heartless, untouched skies

The cloaked distance waits to unfold at dawn

Whenever it will come

Promising him in its bright, mocking lies

Yet I sit here and stand it all

And the world blurs

Slipping away into all the time it takes

For the warmth and comfort of the sun

To shine upon

The field of misery where my heart breaks.
