Breathe

Natasha Ashwe

Forgive me for my stars

For the ballistic powers governing me

For the tonics of my existence

And the clusters of cosmic matter where I breed

Forgive me for what you are

For all the things I will never be

I love you for you persistence

But I cut you up by my constant disbelief

Do not forgive my anger

Or the violence of my undoing

For the poisonous substance

That sustains all my animal greed

Do not forgive the ghastly murder

All the plains of needless ruin

For the inane and unjust blanks

And the plunder of this soul that you grieve

Forgive me for my scars

For your sunlight that exposes these

Evidences of the silence

Upon which my mindless chatters feed

Forgive me for the dark

That I pull over my fleas

It is I that give their voices strength

And it's vain toil without relief

Do not forgive my blunders

Or hold me blameless for my sin

Marvel at the depths to which I've sunk

And let me drown in my evil deeds

But do not forgive the rudders

The billowing sails or the guiding winds

I stare up at them from my cabin bunk

For all I have done is breathe!
